Let's review the definition of gaslighting.
According to Google AI, gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation and emotional abuse where a person systematically distorts reality to make someone doubt their memory, perception, or sanity.
What Gaslighting Looks Like
Denying events: Claiming that a conversation, promise, or event never happened.
Trivializing feelings: Telling someone they are "too sensitive" or overreacting to a situation.
Blaming and deflecting: Shifting the blame for wrongful actions back onto the victim.
Rewriting the narrative: Insisting on a false version of events with absolute confidence.
The Impact: As discussed on Reddit, gaslighting goes far beyond ordinary lying or arguments because the core intent is to destabilize the other person's sense of truth.
Over time, it leads to severe self-doubt, anxiety, confusion, and a heavy dependence on the manipulator for a sense of reality.
Once gaslighting is identified, the dynamic of the manipulation shifts, and the focus turns to restoring self-trust, setting boundaries, and leaving safely.
Immediate Shifts and Realizations
Loss of power: Gaslighting loses much of its control the moment you name the pattern and stop questioning if you are crazy.
Validation: You begin to realize that your memory, feelings, and sanity were intact all along, which helps dismantle ongoing self-doubt.
Nervous system reaction: Your body processes the betrayal, moving from constant survival mode and confusion toward clarity.

Note:
The funny thing about gaslighting is that the first victim is often the gaslighter, because of the sins and crimes committed in the belief that gaslighting will work on everyone, thus continuing long after it might have been effective.
Oftentimes, gaslighters are aggressors, wannabes, or traitors who need to cover up their insecurities, crimes, and shortcomings with lies and deception, just to convince themselves that their faults are not faults, their failures are not failures, and their ambitions are already achieved or achievable without consequences.
For example, Imperial Japan wanted to dominate all of Asia and eventually the world. Their propaganda was a highly organized effort designed to mobilize the domestic population, justify territorial expansion, and oppose Western imperialism. Believing that their propaganda and gaslighting worked, Imperial Japan estimated that the war and the subjugation of China would take about three months.
The same could be said of Russia, which believed in its propaganda and gaslighting the world into thinking it was a superpower, estimating that the conquest of Ukraine would take three days, at most ten.
What's worse, if those countries use psychics to predict the obvious or shallow outcomes, or provide whatever narrative you want to hear, then the future gaslighting results would be similar to gaslighting yourself about the future—especially if these outcomes are self-fulfilling with unseen realities, unsustainable consequences, and catastrophic failures.
Finally, ask yourselves why anyone would need to gaslight, and you will have your answer.
