What happens when you do something really wrong (sinful)?
Do you expect to be struck down by lightening or get away with it?
The real sign in these individual cases is usually not as dramatic as struck down by thunder-storms or as unclimatic as nothing happening or wrong.
The real sign is in the harm caused by the sin(s) or injuries and damages; and the foothold of sin(s), the corruption of your character and mind, and the rotting of your heart and soul.
